PUBLISHING AND CONSUMING APIS SECURELY AT SCALE
Providing DHCW with secure, fault-tolerant and cost optimised solutions for their API management needs.
NHS Wales, part of the publicly funded National Health Service, provides healthcare for over 3 million people. With a 78,000 strong workforce, it is vital for NHS Wales that their services run smoothly and efficiently for all. The Digital Health and Care Wales (DHCW) is a specific sector within NHS Wales that was created in 2021, amid the Covid-19 pandemic to try and progress the digital transformation within Welsh health and care. The aim of the DHCW is to make services more accessible, and with the expansion of digital patient records it was vital that their cloud-based Application Programming Interface (API) was secured, updated and cost-effective.
We built on an already established and trusted partnership with DHCW in delivering technology sourcing and associated professional services. The success of previous engagements added to the confidence in choosing Computacenter to source and build the GCP platform.
Chris Parker Account Manager, Public Sector Wales, Computacenter
The DHCW reached out to Computacenter to help design and find a solution to their API management needs. Their main priorities were to ensure the delivery of a multi-region enterprise scale landing zone. To achieve this, Computacenter brought on board a Google Cloud Platform (GCP) Apigee X SaaS solution, which not only included a secure multi-regional landing zone but also centralised connectivity, management, and identity services. Computacenter also utilised purpose-built Terraform scripts which, as discussed with the DHCW, included various security policies, a shared VPC structure and HA VPN tunnels. In a partnership with Apigee, Computacenter lent a hand to the customer’s workforce while onboarding the GCP platform, Apigee X software as well as the API development. This ensured that all the DHCW’s teams were familiar and comfortable with the new programmes throughout installation.
Throughout the time spent working together, Computacenter delivered an extremely secure CIS compliant architecture with policy guardrails set in place for workloads, as well as data encryption as security and privacy is essential when dealing with patient records. DHCW also received a cost-optimised and fault-tolerant solution which is built to withstand and support 150 million API calls per year. The solution also works in tandem with DHCW’s API strategy and enterprise ideals. Working with DHCW, Computacenter honoured a request to change the original contract which would make room for a network security service called Cloud Armour and help manage both the billing and consumption process.
